The D.O.L.L.S. Project: Whip My Hair
Women and their Hair! Why so important!? Some believe it is part of the essence of who we are. Long, short, straight, curly, natural, processed, extensions, etc – it doesn’t matter; a woman LOVES to look her best and hair styling and treatment is a big part of that beauty regimen.
Research shows that a fair number of African American women do not exercise for fear of ruining hairstyles, effecting hair treatment with perspiration, and adding time to their beauty regimen after a good workout. Now, this may seem trivial but it is actually a public health issue as African American women are in greater need of increasing health and fitness according to Dr. Michael Railey, Associate Dean/Professor of Multicultural Affairs at St. Louis University School of Medicine. According to the study that gathered data from 40 women who were overweight or obese, between the ages of 29 to 69, Dr. Railey’s concluded that 77 percent of Black women are overweight and 49 percent are obese. Moreover, African Americans are suffering higher rates of chronic illness, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, than the U.S. population overall. At the time of the study, 67.5 percent of the women had no exercise regimen at all; 75 percent exercised less than once per week; and 65 percent of the women indicated that exercise is rarely/never fun. Dr. Railey also reported that a number of women were lacking a support system to encourage physical activity.
The Dollhouse Studios will provide that system of support that women need to get fit and stay healthy in a way that is nothing but fun!
OUR STRATEGY is to build strategic alliances among the fitness and hair care industries by encouraging hair care stylists and professionals to develop low maintenance hair styles that would allow women to work out on a regular basis and promote a shared partnership of our Dollhouse members to support affiliate Salons and Stylists in the area. We will also seek corporate sponsorships and discount partnerships with hair care manufactures and retailers in the area to build visibility of the “Health+Beauty!” concept.
To kick off some of our WHIP MY HAIR community Outreach, The Dollhouse will organize and sponsor several 5K walks to benefit Diabetes and Heart Disease. We will promote participation in many of our core and strengthening classes as well, and drive to promote the health and fitness benefits of Pole Fitness for the mind, body, and soul!
